Making an investment in tomorrow, today...

Dr. Carol Carter, co-founder and CEO of the Sunshine Alternative Education and Prevention Center

What influenced you to do what you do?
It was, and is, my belief that prevention should be the first step in the war against drug and alcohol abuse and violence for our children. I became a co-founder of Sunshine due to my own personal experiences with the effects of alcohol and drug addiction on my family and to be an advocate for the children facing these problems.

What inspires you?
My inspiration is waking up and being excited to go to work each day, knowing that I am doing the work that I was put on this earth to do, having the opportunity each day to make a difference in the lives of children and families.

Who’s your female role model and why?
My mother is my inspiration today. As a young child and teen, I did all I could to fight against my mother and her values, struggling to become the person I felt I was meant to be. Today I admire my mom and want to be a person just like her. At almost 90 years old my mother gives back to others all the time without wanting anything in return. Her family is her inspiration and her faith keeps her going. I admire her optimism, strength, and leadership skills and believe this is what has shaped me into the person I am today.

What is your greatest achievement?
Of course, one may think my greatest achievement is Sunshine and all we have accomplished against all odds, but I would really say my greatest achievement is being a mother of 3 amazing women. Being married to my high school sweetheart, my only other dream was to become a mother. I never let Sunshine and my passion to be successful take me away from these gifts I had received. Each of my daughters were truly a blessing and today are making a difference in this world. They each have faced many obstacles in their own lives and are modeling to their own children the importance of family, strength to overcome adversity and the importance of following their own dreams.

What would you like our donors to know about you and your mission?
Sunshine has continued to be a beacon of light in the community for close to 30 years, fighting against the destruction of substance use/abuse and violence. Our mission is to be there for those who may feel hopeless or all alone, letting them know that others too have gone through the same or similar things and there is hope. On a rainy day when the sun is covered by the dark clouds, behind those clouds is the sun, we just cannot see it yet. Our mission is to let others know that though their life may seem dark and cloudy – remember - One Day the Sun will Shine again!
