Shanequa Levin, Founder & CEO, Women's Diversity Network

Shanequa Levin, Founder & CEO, Women's Diversity Network. The Women’s Diversity Network (WDN) connects and mobilizes women of different backgrounds to create positive changes through a more unified sisterhood. Its goal is to educate communities around issues and policies and empower women to break down barriers for improved inclusion and advocacy for all.

What influenced you to do what you do?
I grew up in the poor parts of a wealthy region on Long Island. According to my life trajectory, it seemed destined that I would become a statistic of generational poverty and so much more. The cycle could have continued, but I am determined to be a cycle breaker for my children and my family.

What inspires you?
Seeing people come together to create positive changes and to support one another inspires me. It makes me want to be a better leader so that I can provide them with the support they need to build bridges instead of walls.

Who’s your female role model and why?
Right now, my female role model is Mary Ellen Pleasant. Born into slavery, she became a Gold Rush-era millionaire and a powerful abolitionist. Her story of leadership and victory is inspiring. She made herself great, to make her people great, which made America better.

What is your greatest achievement?
My greatest achievement was learning to truly love myself. That meant learning to accept myself and love the parts of me that I didn’t feel were desirable. It meant learning to accept who I was as a person and learn to be kind to myself. Growing up with low esteem was a challenge to overcome, once I learned to love myself, my life changed for the better.

What would you like our donors to know about you and your mission?
I am an empathetic leader who tries to lead from a consensus mindset. I am determined to create a voice for the voiceless whether it is through advocacy, voting, and/or leadership. Many people have overlooked me because I was a young black mom. They didn’t appreciate my assets. This drove me to be become the award-winning leader that I am today. Through the Women’s Diversity Network, which I am the founder of, we create experiences and advocacy by connecting and mobilizing women of different backgrounds to create positive change through a more unified sisterhood. Every year we put on a summit that celebrates diversity and changes hearts and minds.
