LICF Awards $165,000 in Community Response and Field-of-Interest Grants

August 10, 2004

Whether educating Long Island’s African American adults about heart disease, helping a recycling center develop economic self-sufficiency, starting up a new coalition to advocate for affordable housing, or connecting Long Island’s newest residents – Latinos – with arts education programs available at a local museum, the Long Island Community Foundation is proud of its tradition of grantmaking. At its July 15th meeting, the LICF’s Advisory Board approved thirteen grant awards based upon proposals submitted by Long Island nonprofit organizations.

These grants were awarded in two general categories: community response and specific fields-of-interest. Community response grants help organizations engage residents in programs that better the quality of their lives, improve access to economic and political power, and create understanding among diverse peoples. Specific field-of-interest grants are paid from funds established by donors whose giving is focused on a particular issue. In this cycle, the field-of-interest grants were awarded for environmental programs and education for needy musicians.
