The board and staff of the LICF mourn the loss of this visionary man who believed that giving back to his community was essential. After selling Miracle-Gro to The Scotts Company in 1996, Mr. Hagedorn, along with his wife Amy, devoted himself to helping Long Island institutions and nonprofit organizations through grants from the Horace & Amy Hagedorn Fund in the LICF and through volunteerism. Mr. Hagedorn's passion was children in need. The Hagedorn Fund has supported organizations, big and small, that provide education and human services to children and give food, shelter, counseling services, job skills, and most importantly, hope, to Long Island's most vulnerable families. "It was a privilege to have worked with Horace," said Suzy D. Sonenberg, LICF's executive director. "Horace brought to philanthropy the same curiosity, intelligence, and good humor that made him a giant in the horticultural business. We will all miss him. We will miss the challenges he presented to us. But Horace has seeded programs that will benefit children and families across Long Island way into the future." IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, MRS. HAGEDORN AND THE FAMILY ARE REQUESTING THAT CONTRIBUTIONS BE MADE TO THE HORACE HAGEDORN MEMORIAL FUND IN THE LONG ISLAND COMMUNITY FOUNDATION. Checks should be made out to LICF with a notation in the memo section "Hagedorn Memorial Fund." Contributions and condolences can be sent to the LICF, 1740 Old Jericho Turnpike, Jericho, NY 11753. |
