LICF Grantmaking – New and Old Guidelines

March 28, 2005

On March 24, 2005, the LICF Advisory Board approved $229,000 in community response grants. This grants cycle marked the end of the old "community building" guidelines and the beginning of the new "critical issues" guidelines. Grant proposals were submitted under either the new or old. A broad range of projects are being supported:

• Alliance for Quality Education -- the Long Island component of a statewide organizing effort to increase state school aid
• Child Abuse Prevention Services – an anti-bullying initiative for public schools
• Early Care Endeavor of Long Island – a collaborative effort to improve the quality of childcare and early education
• Family Service League of Suffolk County -- creating a new housing source on Long Island by matching seniors with a room to rent with students in search of affordable housing
• Herstory Writers Workshop – internal development for a women’s writing workshop that promotes expression and understanding among diverse women
• LITAC Nonprofit Solutions – renewed support for management support resources available to Long Island nonprofit organizations
• National Committee of Grandparents for Children’s Rights – startup funding to create a network for grandparents raising children
• Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund – support for Latino Workers’ Rights Project to defend Long Island immigrants
• Planned Parenthood of Nassau County -- advocacy for reproductive health care policies
• Shinnecock Indian Nation Fund -- help in revitalizing the Shinnecock Nation Oyster Hatchery

In addition, three grants were awarded under the Henry Phillip Kraft Family Memorial Fund, which supports environmental projects to: Foundation for Ecological Research in the Northeast; Renewable Energy Long Island; and Sustainable Long Island.

The new guidelines, downloadable on the Competitive Grants page, under Community Response, are now fully in effect.
