LICF Awards Over $300,000 in Grants

At its July 20th meeting, the Long Island Community Foundation's advisory board approved over $300,000 in grants under its new guidelines. In addition to environmental and special purpose grants, the LICF awarded community response grants in three broad categories:
--to address the broad critical issues affecting Long Island regionally
--to address the needs of communities disproportionately affected by these issues
--to enhance the capacity of nonprofit organizations working on these critical issues.

These critical issues include, but are not necessarily limited to, conflict surrounding new immigrants, differential access to quality health care, gang proliferation, inadequate public transportation, inequity in public schools, and structural and institutional racism.

Grants were awarded to these Long Island organizations:

Herricks Youth Center

Long Island Gay & Lesbian Youth (LIGALY)
Long Island Jobs With Justice (JwJ)
Long Island Pine Barrens Society
Long Island Progressive Coalition
Literacy Suffolk, Inc.
Manhasset-Great Neck Economic Opportunity Council
Nassau County Department of Health
Nature Conservancy of Long Island
Neighborhood Network Research Center
New York League of Conservation Voters Education Fund
