Home | About Us | News and EventsLICF Moves to Nassau HallFebruary 26, 2007 For seventeen years, the Long Island Community Foundation made its home in the historic Elias Hicks Farmhouse, part of the larger Jericho Quaker Village. The legacy of this building, dating from 1740, helped guide the mission of the Foundation. Back in the mid-eighteenth century, Elias Hicks was adamant that Quakers should not own other human beings and toured the colonies espousing that message. Recently the house was designated an official site on the New York State Underground Railroad Heritage Trail. On February 26th, the LICF moved to its new offices in Nassau Hall in Syosset. This home, too, has an historic legacy. Egerton Winthrop, Jr. and his wife Emeline, the first to occupy the house, built by Egerton's brother, and designed by the famed architects Delano & Aldrich, were renowned philanthropists, patrons of the arts, and supporters of women's suffrage and unionization. The most recent owners, Lansdell Christie and his wife Helen, hosted African leaders as well as Eleanor Roosevelt. Nassau County acquired the property in 1969. Our new address is: Long Island Community Foundation at Nassau Hall, 1864 Muttontown Road, Syosset, NY 11791. Our new phone number is 516.348.0575. Our new fax number is |
