Long Island Volunteer Hall of Fame Inducts Sonenberg and Schlein

February 02, 2007

Legend has it that back in 1991 when the economy was floundering and organizations that provided services to women and girls were being defunded, the idea of the Long Island Fund for Women & Girls was hatched over a lunch of cobb salads, dressing on the side. Those attending that lunch--Suzy Sonenberg, executive director of the Long Island Community Foundation; Betty Schlein, a member of the LICF advisory board; and Barbara Strongin, former executive director of Planned Parenthood of Suffolk County--put their heads, hearts, and Rolodexes together to bring together a broad coalition of women. For several years, the LICF incubated the Long Island Fund for Women & Girls, now an independent nonprofit, which has given away over $1 million to local organizations led by and benefiting women and girls.

To honor their dedication, the Long Island Volunteer Hall of Fame is inducting Ms. Sonenberg, Ms. Schlein, and Ms. Strongin, along with other committed Long Islanders.
