- 1. How does the grant making process work?
- LICF staff reviews each proposal to determine if and how it fits within the LICF guidelines. If there is a fit, LICF staff conducts detailed research and due diligence, and presents a recommendation to the LICF Board of Advisors and the New York Community Trust for consideration. If a proposal is approved to receive a grant, the sponsoring organization will receive an award letter, outlining terms of the grant and important deadlines, which must be signed and returned to LICF. Organizations will receive an award check within 4-6 weeks of LICF’s receipt of the signed agreement.
- 2. Can I apply for a multi-year grant?
- No. LICF does not make multi-year grant awards.
- 3. How much can I apply for?
- LICF Community Response and Long Island Unitarian Universalist grants usually range from $15,000 to $25,000. The Hospital Fund can award up to $50,000.
- 4. If my proposal has been declined, can we apply again?
- Yes, as long as it is for a different project.
- 5. What is a fiscal sponsor?
- Applicant organizations that do not have a 501(c)3 status must identify a fiscal sponsor. Fiscal sponsors are nonprofits that enable the movement of resources from funders to organizations that share the fiscal sponsor’s mission. - 6. How do I know if proposed activities are considered lobbying or advocacy?
- Advocacy includes identifying, embracing, and promoting a cause; any attempt to shape public opinion, and promote the interests of your community. Lobbying is a specific, legally defined activity that involves stating your position on specific legislation to legislators and/or asking them to support your position. - 7. Can I contact your donors?
- No. LICF does not make our donors' names and addresses available. Our annual report lists all the grants made, and is distributed to a broad community of donors, grantees, elected officials, and others. We also encourage donors to call us for more information about grantees and issues.
- 8. Can I apply for a grant from a specific fund?
- Generally, no. However, occasionally, we might have a fund that will use a request for proposal (RFP) process for grantmaking. Depending on the fund, the RFP might be sent to a closed list, or be open to the public. Information regarding new RFPs would be posted on the LICF website.
