Community Response: Critical Issues, Critical Communities, Critical Organizations

Purpose:

  • Address the broad critical issues affecting Long Island regionally, including, but not limited to, structural and institutional racism, lack of affordable housing, inadequate public transportation, conflict surrounding new immigrants, differential access to quality health care, and the needs of a growing aging population;
  • Address the needs of communities disproportionately affected by these and other critical issues;
  • Enhance the capacity of nonprofit organizations working on these issues, both regionally and locally, by supporting local delivery of quality "management assistance" services, research in support of advocacy, and efforts to build alliances and collaborations to address critical issues and/or work in communities that are disproportionately affected by these issues.

Grant range: Most grants fall into the $5,000 - $15,000 range, although larger grants are occasionally awarded. Grants are made for one year at a time, but may sometimes be renewed for a second and even a third year.

Eligibility:

  • A community group or emerging grassroots organization that can secure the cooperation of a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization willing to administer the grant

or

  • 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization operating for charitable purposes

and

located in Nassau or Suffolk County and working directly and primarily for the benefit of Long Island residents.
