ISSUE:  ECONOMIC IMPACT

Meeting Basic Human Need 

PECONIC COMMUNITY COUNCIL, INC.                                               $22,500
To expand walk-in services and open two new
locations in response to the needs of homeless and near-homeless individuals and
families on Long Island’s North and South forks.

SUSTAINABLE LONG ISLAND                                                                $18,000
A planning grant for a project to increase access to healthy and affordable
food in Long Island’s most distressed communities.

 

ISSUE:  ENVIRONMENT                       

Ensuring An Informed Electorate

NY LEAGUE OF CONSERVATION VOTERS EDUCATION FUND    $15,000
For an effort to engage and educate Long Islanders on environmental issues
and the environmental decision-making process while empowering them to be
effective environmental advocates.


Protecting Open Space

LONG ISLAND PINE BARRENS SOCIETY, INC.                                 $15,000
To update the Comprehensive Land Use Plan (CLUP) to protect additional
acreage in the Compatible Growth Area of the Pine Barrens.



ISSUE:  HEALTH

Addressing The Needs Of An Aging Population 

DOMINICAN SISTERS FAMILY HEALTH SERVICES, INC.             $20,000
For a pilot program in collaboration with Southampton Hospital, to improve
transitions across healthcare settings for aged patients diagnosed with heart
failure on L.I.’s East End.



ISSUE:  HOUSING

Supporting The Development Of Affordable Housing 

LONG ISLAND PROGRESSIVE COALITION                                       $18,000
Renewed support for the Yes In My Backyard (YIMBY) project, a campaign
designed to organize public support for specific new affordable housing
projects and initiatives throughout Long Island.

 

GRANTS TO ADDRESS THE NEEDS OF COMMUNITIES
AND POPULATIONS DISPROPORTIONATELY AFFECTED
BY THE BROAD CRITICAL ISSUES

COALITION AGAINST CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT  (CCAN)    $20,000
To support a capacity building program associated with the co-location
of CCAN and the Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence
(NCCADV).

                                                           

COMMUNITY TRAINING AND ASSISTANCE CENTER                   $90,000
For the final phase of the LEAP (Leadership, Effectiveness, Action &
Partnership) Initiative as it continues to build the capacity of organizations
serving low-income and disenfranchised communities.


ELMONT COALITION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT        $15,000
For communications and outreach to ensure community leadership in
implementation of a vision plan developed in 2007 with assistance from
Sustainable Long Island and a private firm.

 

 

 

THE LONG ISLAND UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST FUND
TOTAL GRANTS AWARDED:  $80,000
 

PROGRESSIVE SOCIAL CHANGE

HERSTORY WRITERS WORKSHOP                                                     $20,000
To strengthen the administrative and management capacity of an arts
organization supported by the LIUU Fund for its work with women in prision.


LONG ISLAND CONGREGATIONS, ASSOCIATIONS AND              $20,000
NEIGHBORHOODS (LI-CAN)
Renewed support to continue strengthening organizational infrastructure
of this broad-based, multi-racial, non-partisan grassroots umbrella
organization of dues-paying member institutions in both Nassau and
Suffolk Counties.

EL TEATRO EXPERIMENTAL YERBABRUJA                                     $20,000
For a collaborative effort to engage Long Island communities in a candid
 conversation about racism and hate crimes against Latinos.


THE WORKPLACE PROJECT, INC.                                                        $20,000
To establish an Immigrant Worker Unemployment and Jobs Initiative that
assists laid-off or fired immigrant workers to obtain earned unemployment
benefits, and to promote inclusion of Latino workers in job creation
programs at the local and state levels.
